OVERVIEW
Ruby-Mac Place is a new affordable homeownership community developed by Self Enhancement Inc. through its SEI Living initiative. Located in Portland's East Columbia neighborhood, the project provides opportunities for families to build long-term stability through homeownership while creating a vibrant, walkable residential community.
Designed as a partnership between Green Canopy Node and Propel Studio Architecture, the development reflects a shared commitment to sustainable design, thoughtful neighborhood planning, and homes that remain affordable to own and operate over time.
DESIGN APPROACH
Ruby-Mac Place is planned as a diverse neighborhood rather than a single building. The development combines townhomes, duplexes, and cottages to create a variety of housing choices while maintaining a cohesive architectural character and pedestrian-friendly streetscape.
The homes are designed to balance design quality, constructability, durability, and cost, creating comfortable living environments that support families while contributing positively to the surrounding neighborhood.
NET-ZERO PERFORMANCE
Every home is designed as an all-electric residence targeting net-zero operational energy, with annual building energy consumption offset through on-site photovoltaic solar generation.
High-performance building envelopes, energy-efficient mechanical systems, and durable low-maintenance materials work together to improve comfort, reduce long-term utility costs, and support healthy indoor environments. Sustainability is integrated into the project from the earliest stages of design rather than treated as an added feature.
COMMUNITY
Ruby-Mac Place is designed to encourage neighborhood connections through a mix of family-sized homes, landscaped open spaces, and pedestrian-oriented circulation. The development creates places for residents to gather while supporting everyday interactions between neighbors.
By combining a variety of housing types within a cohesive community plan, the project seeks to provide lasting value for both homeowners and the surrounding neighborhood.
PROPEL STUDIO’S ROLE
Propel Studio Architecture collaborated with Green Canopy Node throughout the design of Ruby-Mac Place, contributing architectural design that integrates high-performance building strategies with practical construction solutions.
The project reflects Propel Studio's experience designing sustainable residential communities that balance architectural quality, environmental performance, constructability, and long-term value. Ruby-Mac Place exemplifies the studio's commitment to creating buildings that are both environmentally responsible and thoughtfully designed for the people who live in them.
