The Rosewood Initiative Modernization

A new design for SE Portland’s community center, providing solutions for our neighborhoods’ needs. With a cascading screen and warm lighting, spaces are comfortable and welcoming, a recipe for positive community changes.

In a partnership with the Rosewood Initiative, we created a schematic design for their community center located in SE Portland. This master design will be implemented over time, as funding is acquired for each phase. The design scheme accommodates a plethora of programs, ranging from a computer lab (to be furnished by Mount Hood Community College) to a large multi-purpose room that can be reserved for community and private events. New leasable office space will also encourage new entrepreneurs and local non-profits to set up shop, such as the workforce development non-profit SE Works already located within Rosewood Initiative. Existing spaces to remain will also be given a face lift, such as the cafe and front desk areas. The new mezzanine will also not only provide additional storage, but will serve as a lofted office space for the employees at Rosewood Initiative. Perhaps the most compelling aspect of this design will be the two-by-four screened wall, that helps to define and separate certain programs in the currently large and vast space. This wall was designed not only to be beautiful, but also affordable and easily to construct, with the hopes of spurring community involvement during the build-out. Along with the design and media attention, partnerships with local consultants PAE and KPFF for feasibility studies should help to propel this project forward and one day embody Rosewood Initiative’s motto of “Building Our Community Together.”

The project schedule aims to begin Summer 2015. The goal is to have as much community involvement in the construction process as possible. Please contact us if you’re interested in getting involved or would like to lend a hand in making this dream a reality.
